EXPERIENCE THE RICH CULTURAL HERITAGE OF SHANGRI-LA

The True Essence of Tibetan Life

Sitting on the edge of the Tibetan Plateau, Shangri-la was an important stop on the Ancient Tea Horse Road. As Shangri-la was originally a part of the ancient Tibetan kingdom of Kham, the population here is mainly Tibetan. Little has changed in the past 200 years and the locals continue to live pure, uncomplicated, peaceful lives.

A guided walk around the ancient Tibetan Bisong Village reveals fascinating insights into the local way of life. Traditional Tibetan houses and nomadic tents dot the open meadows and undulating hills. During qingke harvesting season, observe the communal spirit of villagers drying highland barley on towering wooden racks. See elderly Tibetan ladies performing their daily spiritual ritual of praying and circumambulating holy Mani stone piles.

Shangri-la Old Town

Stroll through the quaint cobblestoned streets and traditional Tibetan buildings in Old Town. Also known as Dukezong, it has 1300 years of history. Visit the largest prayer wheel in the world, and turn it three times to be blessed with peace and longevity. In the evening, join the locals in the warmth of traditional Tibetan square dancing.
